Go pushes food security

Senator Christopher "Bong" Go on Monday called on the government "to swiftly address" the help the marginalized sector needs by addressing food security as the country continues to grapple with the prevailing health crisis and other calamities, according to a report by Philippine News Agency.

"Our country battled numerous calamities which affected the lives of the ordinary Filipino and limited our access to a stable food supply," Go said in his manifestation during the Senate Committee on Agriculture hearing on rising food prices.

Go said Covid-19 pandemic and other calamities have led to a considerable increase in food prices.

"In these extraordinary times, the government must act swiftly to address the needs of less fortunate Filipinos," he said. "Ensuring affordable prices of agricultural products remains to be one of the priorities of this administration."

He said Filipino families deserve to have access to quality, sufficient and nutritious foods.

Go lauded President Rodrigo Duterte for issuing Executive Order (EO) No. 124 that mandates a 60-day price ceiling on selected pork and chicken products within the National Capital Region (NCR).

"Under our Price Act, is necessary to lessen the adverse impacts of the natural calamities that ravaged our country," Go said. "It ensures that meat products remain affordable and accessible to the public and also prevents price."

Meanwhile, Go called on the government agencies in charge of food security to monitor the market operations.

"I appeal to [Agriculture] Secretary William Dar, Secretary Ramon Lopez of the DTI [Department of Trade and Industry], and the private sector to monitor the prices of food products and help each other in protecting the public from widespread hunger," he said.

Go said most of the people have lost their jobs and livelihood due to the restrictions imposed during the coronavirus pandemic.

"Bilang mambabatas, patuloy ang panawagan ko sa Department of Agriculture na maglatag ng (As a lawmaker, we will continue to call on the Department of Agriculture to lay down a) long-term solutions towards food security," he added.

Go also appealed to the meat traders to comply with the government’s designated price ceiling for meat products and suspend their planned market holiday.

He said the rising prices in the local market affected the ordinary Filipinos.

"Let us balance the interests of everyone to achieve the common good," said Go.
