A total of 23 patrons of three rail lines in the National Capital Region tested positive for the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) on Friday through the free antigen testing for random and volunteering passengers, according to a report by Philippine News Agency.

In a Facebook post, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) reported that the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2), Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3), and the Philippine National Railways (PNR) administered 228 tests, with 205 yielding negative results.

“Passengers who test positive in the aforesaid testing shall not be permitted to ride the trains,” the DOTr stated.

Passengers must return home, isolate, and report to their Barangay Health Emergency Response Team for “proper support and monitoring.”

“They are also advised to undergo confirmatory RT-PCR (reverse transcription - polymerase chain reaction) testing,” the DOTr said.

On the other hand, the Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC), the operator and maintenance provider of the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1), will join the three other rail lines in offering free random antigen tests beginning Saturday.

In a statement, the LRMC said its testing sites would be located in LRT-1 stations with a high volume of passengers, such as in Edsa in Pasay, Baclaran in Parañaque, Monumento in Caloocan, and Carriedo in Manila on January 15 and 17.

The free antigen tests in LRT-2, MRT-3, and PNR are part of the DOTr’s efforts to curb Covid-19 infection in public transportation.
