Political clans in the eastern part of the National Capital Region lost to candidates who vowed to end the clans’ decades-long political dominance in their respective cities.

Francis Zamora, son of well-known politician Ronaldo Zamora, defeated Janella Estrada in the mayoralty race in San Juan. Her family has long established the city as their bailiwick.

Zamora won with a margin of 10,247 votes against Janella Estrada, daughter of former senator Jinggoy Estrada and granddaughter of outgoing Manila mayor Joseph Estrada, who was the first Estrada to take the office in 1969.

“This is the change we are waiting for a long time, and now we have it. The people of San Juan have spoken. They want to change the system, the governance, and the leadership. This is it,” Zamora said.

In Pasig City, 29-year-old Vico Sotto is set to take the city’s top position, wresting control from the Eusebio clan, which had held power in the city for 27 years.

Sotto, son of actor Vic Sotto and actress Coney Reyes, acquired a comfortable lead of close to 100,000 votes over incumbent mayor Robert “Bobby” Eusebio, who received around 120,000 votes.

“From the beginning, this fight is not about a specific position. It’s for the true and lasting change in our city,” Sotto said. “We already took the first step. This is just the first step. I am very happy that we achieved this.”
