Magcalayo pulls out from US golf tournament
Jolo Magcalayo will miss the 120th US Amateur, citing the fast rising COVID-19 cases in the United States, particularly in Oregon where the event will take place, as the major reason.
The decision was made after finding out that active cases in Oregon are increasing and the hassle of traveling abroad because of strict health and safety protocols being implemented.
Oregon, with a population of around 4.5 million, has 17,088 cases with 289 deaths as of July 27.
Had Magcalayo pushed through with the trip, the former national team member would be required to undergo the mandatory 14-day quarantine.
The US Amateur will take place from August 10- 16 at the Brandon Dunes Golf Resort.
His family has already informed the USGA, which gave him an invite, because of his strong performance in 2019, for the oldest amateur championship in the US, of the withdrawal.
Magcalayo won three times last year—Menpora Emeralda Cup, AJGA Junior at Chicopee and the W Express RVF Cup—and is now the highest ranked Filipino in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.
