The Philippine National Police raised the Philippine flag at Camp Crame in Quezon City on Wednesday morning in celebration of the country’s 121st Independence Day.

Police camps in different regions, such as in Apayao, Cordillera Administrative Region, Nueva Ecija in Central Luzon, Roxas City in Western Visayas, Limasawa in Eastern Visayas, and General Santos City in Soccsksargen, followed suit.

In his Independence Day address, PNP chief Gen. Oscar Albayalde urged the 190,000-strong police force to remember and imitate the heroism of those who fought for the country’s independence from foreign invaders.

This year’s theme for Independence Day was Kalayaan 2019: Tapang ng Bayan, Malasakit sa Mamamayan.

“Let us join together in honoring our ancestors and heroes who fought, sacrificed, and offered their lives so that we may attain freedom from foreign invaders,” Albayalde said in his address delivered by Lt. Gen. Fernando Mendez Jr., PNP deputy director for administration.

Albayalde, who was in Lanao del Sur for the flag-raising ceremony, paid tribute to the country’s modern heroes who continued to risk their lives for the country.

“Today, we celebrate not only the gallantry and bravery of the heroes who fought for our freedom but also the modern heroes who continue to serve and toil blood and sweat for the safety, orderliness, and development of our country,” he said.

“These modern heroes include policemen, soldiers, firefighters, teachers, farmers, metro aides, and other public servants and citizens who sacrifice, work, and offer their lives for the Filipino people. This day is for them, too,” Albayalde added.
