Bahay pag-asa kids learn computer skills

in City News / Navotas by 289

Some 49 children in conflict with the law (CICL) staying at the Navotas Bahay Pag-asa Wednesday graduated from the city’s COmputer Outreach Learning (COOL) Program.

Under COOL, students of any age learn how to use Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point. Classes are usually held in a COOL truck two hours per day for five days.

In his speech, Mayor John Rey Tiangco stressed the importance of being computer literate.

“It is crucial that we have sufficient knowledge and skills on how to use a computer, especially now that we largely depend on technology for our everyday life. This is why through COOL, we teach kids as young as five years old and even those who are in their 70s how to use the computer,” he said.

Aside from COOL, CICLs at the Bahay Pag-asa are also enrolled in the Alternative Learning System (ALS) being implemented by the Department of Education.

Tiangco said the city will provide the center with an additional computer so CICLs can practice what they learned and use it for research.

“Don’t stop learning and improving yourself. Once you’re done here, continue your studies,” he said.

The mayor also invited the CICLs to take up technical-vocational courses at the Navotas Training and Assessment (NAVOTAAS) Institute.

He said Navotas will soon have two additional training centers, one of which will offer courses on animation and visual graphics.

Since 2018, the city, through the NavotaAs Hanapbuhay Center, also held livelihood skills trainings at the Bahay Pag-asa. CICLs learned how to make powder and liquid detergent, buchi, kutsinta, brownies, maja blanca, chocolate cupcake and puto.

After the graduation from COOL, they were also taught how to make dishwashing liquid and perfume.
